Panther players named to all district team

General Trass Panthers football team was well represented on the 2023 District 2-2A All District Team, according to Head Coach Toriano Wells.

Panther players who received all district honors include: first team offense: Kameron Williams, senior, Anton Davis, junior, Joshua Hopkins, junior; second team offense: Keimare Campbell, senior, Aaron Martin, sophomore, Jamarion Powell, sophomore; first team defense: Kameron Williams, Twan Wilson, junior, Ahmonie Williams, junior; second team defense: Stephon Everfield, senior, Dylan Baker, senior, Za’Corrion McCallum, junior, J’Bion Newson, sophomore.

Wells spoke highly of the all district team selection from General Trass. Kameron Williams is a senior and plays the position of running back for the Panthers. He had one of the strongest seasons of any running back in Panthers history, Wells said. He has been an all district defensive player the last three seasons. This season, Wells said, he proved he was a leader.

“I knew he had the athleticism and passion to dominate on the field, but I wanted to see if he had the leadership component that is necessary to get your teammates and these younger guys to play through pain and fatigue,” Wells said. “He was our leader and the guys were excited to follow his lead. This was one of the most impressive seasons I have ever seen for a performance on offense and defense.”

Wells also said he is very happy to see two more seniors from the team receive their accolades from standout performances during their final year of high school football. “Dylan Baker and Stephon Everfield, both, had strong senior years and it was very special to see them recognized for their contributions on the defensive side of the ball,” Wells said. “Just as I said about Kam, the same goes for them when it comes to the issue of leadership. As a senior in high school sports, the kids understand that younger players are watching them on and off the field. They want to learn from them, and they both did an outstanding job for us this season and throughout their high school careers at GTHS.”

The remaining Panthers who made the all district team were thrust into key positions due to the large number of seniors that left the team over the last two seasons. Wells says those players have gained experience, gotten better during their time on the team, and have excelled as the season went on.

“I have to say that it is always a good thing to see the linemen get recognized,” Wells said. “Whether it’s on offense or defense, usually they are the ones creating the holes for the running backs, giving the quarterback time to throw the ball or run with it, and even on defense, often they are engaging the other team’s linemen and creating lanes for linebackers to make plays. So, while they may not show up on stat sheets, their contributions are vital to a team’s success. We are very proud of our linemen that made the team: Joshua Hopkins, Twan Wilson, Aaron Martin, Jamarion Powell, and Everfield. Za’Corrion McCallum and J’Bion Newson did a great job this season on defense. Za’Corrion came back strong from a serious injury last year and J’Bion grew up fast this season as a sophomore and came through as the season progressed.”

Congratulations to all of the Panthers who made the all district team this season.
